Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer of the aging rock band Green Day, changed the lyrics to the band’s single American Idiot in an insult to Trump supporters on live TV.
The band performed the song on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve Rockin’ Eve on ABC, which attracted roughly 13.7 million viewers a year ago. During the band’s performance, Armstrong opted to change the lyrics at a crucial part, singing “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda” instead of the song’s actual lyrics, “I’m not part of a redneck agenda.”
Green Day’s latest anti-Trump rant was widely met with mockery on social media, with X owner Elon Musk laughing off the band’s frequent political statements. “Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it,” Musk wrote in an X post complete with two laughing emojis.
Another user posted a meme that slammed the band as “boot lickers” for the government, pharmaceutical companies, arms contractors and financial firms such as BlackRock.
